Sasha Mereu has been deeply entrenched in the magic world for the last fifteen years, lending his performing, assisting, and advising skills, both onstage and behind the scenes, to some of the top acts in magic since 2005. With a broad skill set spanning acting, directing, music, dance, and most importantly a love of mystery and wonder, Sasha has worked in theatres around the world doing magic, mentalism, and grand stage illusion. From London's West End to Broadway in New York City, from the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood to various television appearances, he has developed a critical eye for what great magic looks like and more importantly how to get there. Sasha is currently writing a book on magic assisting and is consistently working with private clients to make their acts more theatrical and more memorable, collaborating to make their artistic visions a reality. Sasha is currently based in Portland, OR.
Magically, influenced by the performance philosophies of Eugene Burger and Dr. Lawrence Haas as well the showmanship of Annemann, Sasha specializes in what he calls psychological close-up, a mixture of sleight of hand and mentalism that is driven by theatrical presentation. Sasha trained as an actor before getting into magic and that produced a love of story-telling which has come to influence his work. He has been a member of the Magic Castle in Hollywood, CA since 2007 and misses the sirloin steak tips they used to have there.
Sasha recently discovered painting and while he is new to the craft, he has found a passion in acrylic on canvas. His paintings draw inspiration from neural imaging networks, impressions of emotionally significant moments, dreams and the distortion of memory. He favors saturated colors and playing with the concept of compliments to heighten intensity, Sasha’s work celebrates wonder and mystery. He regularly sells his work and was most recently shown at Art at the Cave in Vancouver, WA.
Sasha is a multi-instrumentalist and has added guitar, bass, drums, and vocals to numerous albums since he was 16, both as a soloist and a collaborator. He currently plays lead guitar for a San Francisco Bay Area-based punkrock band called United Defiance. Sasha is also the creator and proprietor of an original short-form horror podcast called The Ossuary. Season One launched in October 2020. Season Two is currently in the works.
In his non-professional life, Sasha cultivates an array of eclectic interests. He is an amateur linguist and enjoys traveling and conversing with people around the world for work and pleasure, collecting languages like hats. Sasha is an avid reader of novels, a writer of short stories and silly poetry, a juggler, a mime, and he loves to play Pétanque with his children.
